Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are organic-inorganic crystalline structures consisting of metal ions and organic linker molecules (ligands), creating open crystalline frameworks with permanent porosity. They possess extremely high porosity and surface area and were first developed in the late 1990s. Commercial interest in MOFs has exploded recently in gas storage and separation, purification, electrochemical energy storage and sensing.

MOFs are highly attractive for a range of industrial applications as they use non-hazardous feedstock, are cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
